Aurora kinase is a member of the CMGC kinase family. The CMGC kinases are characterized by a conserved catalytic domain of approximately 250 amino acids. This conserved domain shows similarity to the catalytic domain of serine/threonine and tyrosine kinases, but lacks the tyrosine kinase insertion (TK-I) and histidines in the ATP binding site of tyrosine kinases. CMGC kinases also contain two other conserved regions located in the N-terminus and C-terminus of the protein.
The Aurora kinase family is comprised of three highly conserved members, Aurora-A, Aurora-B, and Aurora-C, and one kinase, Aurora-X (Aurora-X was recently renamed Aurora-M.
